Steven Toast, an eccentric middle aged actor with a chequered past, spends more time dealing with his problems off stage than performing on it。Luke Ellis的父母某天突然被杀，而他则被拐走并被关在一处叫「The Institute」的地方，他的新房间与老家一样，但是没有窗，及门外尽是其他房间的门。这儿关着的孩子都有特殊能力，例如念力﹑心灵感应等。 这个地方会无情地榨取孩子们的超能力，不接受的话会受到各种惩罚；主角Luke渴望能逃出「The Institute」，不过过去从没有人成功过。。
