高美丽（方青卓 饰）人称胖婶。这天，她要去省城看望闺女和姑爷，在火车上结识了省群艺馆退休馆长王年湖（张洪杰 饰），俩人谈得很投机。来到闺女春燕（李慧杰 饰）家，她拿出自已种大棚疏菜挣下的二十万元钱，准备资助上学的外甥女丹丹（王馨悦 饰），忌料闺女的婚姻早己出现危机，姑爷周家祥（许烨 饰）在外面养了其他女人。和胖婶一面之交的王年湖寻上门来，听完胖婶介绍其闺女将要婚变时，俩人决定共同“掺和掺和”。 这天，买菜的胖婶意外遇见当年在村里插队的刘大伟（吴连生 饰），如今混得靠打零工生活，胖婶决定帮他一把。在王年湖和胖婶多方周旋下，他们找到了姑爷的情人小弛，她开始反省自己插足的错误......。MOTHER TONGUE (母语) is a portrait of a Chinese American family in which the consequences of a mother’s decision to leave her young daughter in the care of a white American “homestay” family are slowly unearthed over the course of a family dinner.
